William S. Hart Baseball and Softball will be celebrating a milestone anniversary Saturday at its complex in Santa Clarita.

One of the Santa Clarita Valley’s most recognizable sports organizations will mark its 60th anniversary with a celebration that begins at 9 a.m.

City leaders, including Santa Clarita Mayor Laurene Weste, along with former players such as current Major Leaguer James Shields and Olympic gold medalist in softball Nicole Giordano, are expected to participate in the event.

According to league President Arnie Durazo, there will be a performance of the national anthem, awards presentations, a ceremonial first pitch and skills competitions on most of the 10 fields at the complex.

There will also be food and beverage sales.

The league has approximately 1,800 baseball and softball players and relies heavily on volunteers.

“It’s a lot of hard work.” Durazo said. “Sixty years of volunteers take a lot of time and effort to keep this league running.”

Added publicity director Natalie Schuhler: “How many life skills were learned here — teaching morals and teamwork? Not just to people who became famous, but to all people who went through here.

“Everyone has a story about being here.”

The event is open to the public. The league’s fields are at on Auto Center Court behind Mercedes Benz of Valencia and Valencia BMW.
