This is West Ranch’s M.O. this year, and more often than not the Wildcats are winning because or in spite of it.

The Wildcats defeated the Saugus Centurions 58-49 on Friday at West Ranch High in their sixth Foothill League game decided by less than 10 points.

“I’m happy we’re winning. That old cliche, ‘A W is a W,’” said West Ranch head coach Shant Bicakci. “These games we win close we’d rather have them than lose obviously, but there are definitely times we look back and go, ‘God, if we can get this game to 15 or even 10 we can have a little breathing room.”

Saugus (9-17 overall, 0-8 Foothill League) wouldn’t let that happen.

The Centurions led 13-12 after one quarter, trailed 28-24 halftime and 43-37 at the end of three quarters.

Again, it was Jacob Tobon who carried the load for Saugus.

He scored 23 points in the game.

But West Ranch (12-13, 5-3) was able to finally extend the lead in the fourth quarter.

Ryne Williams scored 14 points for the Wildcats, as did Alec Rodriguez, who hit two key three-pointers in the third quarter.

Izayah Doyle and Christian Ware-Berry each added 11 for West Ranch.

West Ranch is still in position to finish in second place in the Foothill with two wins next week.

Saugus is in search of that elusive first Foothill win with games against Canyon and Golden Valley next week.
