A 16-year-old Ojai boy is dead following an off-road motorcycling incident Sunday at Rowher Flats, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol said.

About 11 a.m. Sunday, the boy was traveling in the Rowher Flats Off-Highway Vehicle riding area in the hills north of Canyon Country, the CHP said in a news release issued Sunday afternoon.

The boy, whose identity has not been made public, was traveling in a northerly direction down a steep incline at an unknown rate of speed, according to the CHP Officer who prepared the release.

“The boy made an unsafe turning movement to the right and traveled off the designated trail. Due to the rough terrain, he was unable to maintain control of the motorcycle and was ejected off of his vehicle,” the officer wrote.

The boy was riding a 2013 Yamaha motorcycle.

Both the boy and his bike traveled in a northeasterly direction down the incline and collided at the bottom of a ravine, the CHP officer said.

“Due to the severity of his injuries he was airlifted by Los Angeles County Fire Department to Henry Mayo (Newhall Memorial Hospital) where he succumbed to his injuries,” he said.

Shortly after 11:30 a.m. Sunday, paramedics with the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to calls from officials at the Angeles National Forest for a person requiring medical aid, said Supervisor Melanie Flores.

They responded to the incident on Sierra Highway at Rowher Flats, she said. Rowher Flats is a popular area for off-road driving enthusiasts.

At 11:37 a.m., a helicopter touched down in the area and transported one patient to the hospital, Flores said.
“We just show (on our log) that the incident was some type of incident off of the highway,” she said.

The chopper arrived at Henry Mayo shortly before 12:30 p.m.

Efforts to save the boy’s life, however, were unsuccessful, a CHP officer said at 5 p.m., adding that the “hospital called the coroner.”

The fatality marks the second such death to happen in the space of a week.

On Feb. 2, 21-year-old motorcycle racer Tommy Aquino of Saugus died in a crash at the Piru Motocross Park on Center Street in Piru.
