More than a year after a suspect was arrested in 2012’s only Santa Clarita Valley murder, jury selection was set to begin Monday but was abruptly postponed due to a change in defense lawyers, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said.

Cesar Navarro, 21, who was ordered in July to stand trial on one count of first-degree murder in the death of Franco Olea, appeared in San Fernando Superior Court on Monday for what was to be the first day of his trial.

“But there was a change in the public defender’s lawyer,” said a spokeswoman at the D.A.’s office.

The case is now scheduled for jury trial March 20.

Navarro entered a plea of not guilty to the felony charge in September.

According to Sheriff’s Department investigators, Olea stepped outside his Newhall home on Dec. 2, 2012, in response to an apparent burglary of his vehicle and wound up struggling with another man on his driveway before being stabbed.

He died at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. His death was the only Santa Clarita Valley murder in 2012.

Navarro, who was arrested Jan. 23, 2013, remains in custody at the Pitchess Detention Center’s East Facility.
