SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Federal law enforcement authorities have charged a Democratic state lawmaker and his brother with multiple counts involving bribery, kickbacks and cover-ups.

The Associated Press obtained a copy of the indictment shortly before the FBI and U.S. attorney's office were to announce the charges at a Friday news conference.

The 24-count indictment was filed Thursday in federal court in Los Angeles against state Sen. Ron Calderon and his brother, Tom, a former state lawmaker who now works as a lobbyist.

It says Ron Calderon would "seek and accept bribes and kickbacks" and funnel some of the money to his children and political groups that he and his brother controlled.

Calderon has denied wrongdoing, and his attorney, Mark Geragos, did not return telephone messages Friday seeking comment.
