The city of Santa Clarita's Web site invites students from kindergarten through college across the Santa Clarita Valley to submit their suggestions on what they would do if selected to serve as mayor for the day.

The winning response will earn a student a day serving as the cty of Santa Clarita's Honorary Mayor.

The winning Santa Clarita student will get the chance to give suggestions pertaining to important city issues, attend a City Council Meeting, enjoy one-on-one time with Mayor Ferry and more.

The winning student may also be able to put their suggestion into action with the help of city staff.

"Local youth are an important and often untapped resource for advice on important city issues," Ferry said. "The contest gives local kids the chance to be heard and the winning applicant may get to make their suggestion a reality."

To participate, local youth can log on to, provide their name, age and school and submit their suggestion on what they would do if given the chance to serve as Mayor for a day. Applicants must be enrolled in any school in the Santa Clarita Valley, including elementary, junior high, high school and college in order to be eligible for the contest.

Local youth enrolled in home-school programs are also eligible to participate.

Responses must be kept to 500 characters or less- and participants are encouraged to read the rules about posting before submitting their suggestions, no later than April 30 at

The city's "Mayor for a Day" contest is part of a monthly interactive forum on the city's newest Web site for engaging youth,

Each month, the site posts a new online question for local youth to think about and respond to.

"Mayor Dude" Frank Ferry then hosts a live chat on every fourth Thursday of the month to discuss the monthly topic and hear comment from local young people on cty issues of interest to them.
