The Canyon Cowboys took it to Loara High of Anaheim on the road on Friday in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division IIAA playoffs.

And by took it to the Saxons, Canyon was up so big in the postseason game there was a running clock in the fourth quarter.

The Cowboys defeated the Saxons 84-42 and will now host La Habra High on Tuesday in the second round.

The Foothill League’s fourth-place team started the game up 20-0 and ended it with no doubt.

“We thought they’d be a tough challenge. I’ve been worried about the way things were progressing, but I knew the wins would come,” said Canyon head coach Sean DeLong. “But running clock? I don’t know if we thought that.”

Ben Taufahema led Canyon (22-6) with 21 points. He hit five 3-pointers in the game.

Marc Cabrera added 17 points and seven assists.

Mark Bell scored 11 points and Dean Hendrix-Davis scored eight points and pulled down six rebounds.

Canyon’s defense allowed just four points to the Saxons (14-14) in the first quarter and five in the fourth.

DeLong said he felt like this was more the team that won 15 straight games at one point in the season and less like the team that went 1-3 in the Foothill League’s final four games.

Canyon dove for loose balls on Friday, had 20 steals and scored relentlessly.

“I don’t want to come off as cocky, but I knew my team could do this if we play together,” DeLong said. “This week, the mind set changed. Guys really focused. Our motto is to keep the season going. It showed today.”
