A Saugus woman is so thrilled about her neighbors’ Marine son coming home from Afghanistan in a few days that she’s inviting the entire community to join in extending a welcome.

Susan Shoemaker is calling on local businesses to put yellow ribbons in their windows for Dakota Cigrang, who is expected home sometime between March 19 and 21 after a six-month tour in Afghanistan. She’s also inviting Santa Clarita Valley residents to send gift cards for the young man — “just a little thank you.”

“It’s about family,” she said of Cigrang’s homecoming, “but it’s also about community. He was out there fighting for all of us.”

Meantime, parents Frank and Siobhan Cigrang are on pins and needles awaiting their 21-year-old son’s arrival.

“Everything’s up in the air, as always with the military,” Frank Cigrang said of his son’s actual date and time of arrival. “As soon as he gets back, he goes to leadership school.”

Dakota Cigrang will be stationed at 29 Palms Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center during his training, his father said, but he usually comes home on weekends when he’s there. And since most of Dakota’s fellow Marines live out of state, “he brings his boys home with him.”

Asked if that wasn’t a lot of mouths to feed, Frank Cigrang laughed and said, “We don’t mind. They’re all respectful, nice, and they never come over empty-handed.”

Said his mother, Siobhan Cigrang, “I just can’t wait to touch his face and to hug him.”

After the training and a four-week leave, Dakota will be going to another “hot zone,” his father said.

Gift cards or letters may be sent to Frank Cigrang’s business post office box at 26893 Bouquet Canyon Road, Ste C No. 422, Saugus CA 91350
