Los Angeles County firefighters evacuated dorm 500 at Pitchess Detention Center after a fluorescent-light ballast blew out and sent smoke billowing through the building Monday, a Los Angeles County Fire Department official said.

Two County fire engines raced to the scene just after noon on Monday after jail officials reported heavy smoke, Inspector Steve Zermeno said. Firefighters arrived and found no flames.

Inmates were allowed back in the building later in the afternoon on Monday, said Don Rodriguez, Pitchess Detention Center Commander.

"These things happen often, but we roll a lot of people on theses incidents to be safe," he said.
