Nearly 200 people turned out Saturday for a free health fair in Canyon Country hosted by Santa Clarita and Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.

The event featured 22 information booths from nonprofit agencies, many in the Santa Clarita Valley but some from Los County outside the immediate area.

Many of the booths focused on child and family health, providing information on free health screenings, job placement information and other resources for the disabled, tips on how to properly use a child safety car seat, as well as information on local low-cost or no-cost health centers and services.

Volunteers Henry Mayo and Charter College in Canyon Country administered free health screenings inside the Canyon Country Community Center, where guests could check their cholesterol, glucose levels, heart beat and blood pressure, body-mass index and lung capacity.

Before the event, members from the Outreach and Neighborhood Services organization, part of the city, went out to the Granada Via Mobile Home Park and Park Sierra Apartments on Jakes Way to hand out flyers and invite people to the event, the first at the Canyon Country Community Center.

Typically the event is held at the Newhall Community Center, but the city wanted to bring the service to the Canyon Country, said Susie Cordova, human services coordinator.

The city holds the event quarterly every three months and will have its next free health fair 7:30-10:30 a.m. May 10 at the Newhall Community Center.
