Two wounded after near-collision turns violent

A Sunday morning shooting incident has Santa Clarita Valley sheriff's detectives scrambling for clues, according to a sheriff's statement spokesperson.

The gunfire apparently was prompted by a near-collision between two cars close to Cedarcreek Street and Camp Plenty Road in Canyon Country on Sunday, according to a sheriff's statement.

After the near-collision, two suspects in a 1990s white four-door sedan followed the car they nearly collided with, which contained four people, on several side streets, a sheriff's statement said. The suspects fired shots from their car into the victims' car near the intersection of Whites Canyon Road and Pleasantdale Street, a sheriff's statement said. The bullets struck two passengers in the rear seat of the second vehicle, the statement said.

"Regardless of what led to the shooting, there is someone out there with a gun in his car who is willing to use it," Sgt. Darren Harris said.

The victims flagged down the deputies on Soledad Canyon Road and the gunshot victims were rushed to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, a sheriff's statement said. One of the victims was struck in the back and the second was apparently struck in the head by a bullet fragment. Condition reports on them are not available, but the wounds are not believed to be life-threatening, a sheriff's statement said.

Deputies canvassed the area looking for the white vehicle and the suspects, but were not able to locate them, according to a sheriff's statement.

Santa Clarita Valley COBRA Detectives are investigating whether the incident is gang-related.

The suspects are described as Hispanic males, 20-25 years old, with shaved heads. The suspected shooter appeared to be heavyset.

Anyone with any information regarding this incident should immediately contact Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station at (661)255-1121.
