SANTA CLARITA — This spring, College of the Canyons will host its second TEDxCollegeoftheCanyons conference, which will pivot around the theme of perspectives.

An independently organized event licensed by TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design), TEDxCollegeoftheCanyons will feature speakers who will offer their perspectives on topics such as biology, art, technology, civic service, recycling, design, negotiation and women in corporate culture.

“The theme is perspectives because the speakers will either provide a new insight on a familiar topic or combined perspectives on seemingly unrelated subjects, such as biology and art,” said Jia-Yi Cheng-Levine, COC professor and TEDx faculty advisor. “Last year's conference was one of the most exhilarating conferences I have ever helped organize because students were the driving force behind the ideas and we were able to reach many segments of the community. We materialized what TEDx conferences hope to accomplish—bring together the community to share stories and ideas that are inspiring and intellectually stimulating.”

TEDxCollegeoftheCanyons will follow TED’s well-known format of 18-minute presentations from various speakers as well as other performances and demonstrations.

Attendees will also have opportunities to view acclaimed TED Talks videos of past conference speakers, as part of the day’s activities.

Dr. Charles Chase, manager of the Revolutionary Technology Programs organization for the Lockheed Martin Skunk Works, will be speaking at the conference on the topic of revolutionary technology.

Other speakers will include Dr. David Andrus (COC political science professor), Kelly Burke, (COC biology professor), Dr. Kelly Cude (COC biology professor), Dr. Annette Craven (Management professor at the University of the Incarnate Word), Frank Oviedo (Assistant City Manager for the City of Santa Clarita) and Jane Skeeter (Founder/CEO of UltraGlas, Inc).

The American Tribal Style Belly® Dance and tribal drum troupe “Twisted Gypsy” will also perform their electrifying and hypnotic show at the conference.

TEDxCollegeoftheCanyons will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center (PAC), located on the college’s Valencia campus.

Conference admission is $20 for students and $50 for non-students. Tickets will go on sale on March 20. Students can purchase tickets through the college’s Associated Student Government with a valid student I.D. card.

TEDxCollegeoftheCanyons is hosted by the college’s TEDx Club and is sponsored by COC Associated Student Government (ASG), the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Young Entrepreneurship Program (YEP) and Logix.

The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
