Canyon girls basketball new head coach Jessica Haayer understands how special the last five years were for the Cowboys under previous coach Chuck Johns.

She hopes that her players and people involved in the program will trust that she can lead the program in a similar direction.

“(Johns) left such a great legacy. I want the community and players and parents to buy into me and my system,” said Haayer, who was announced as Canyon’s new head coach on Wednesday. “My greatest challenge is I hope to get their buy-in and respect in me and believe in me.”

Under Johns, the Cowboys have won five Foothill League titles in five seasons and went to five CIF-Southern Section divisional quarterfinals. Their overall record was 122-30.

He resigned earlier this month because his family will possibly have to relocate.

Haayer was the Canyon junior varsity head coach this past season and previously was the head varsity coach at Seaside High in Monterey.

During Canyon’s varsity’s postseason run this year, Haayer was on the bench assisting Johns.

But she has a basketball background and will bring unique knowledge to the program.

Haayer played basketball at Humboldt State and was a National Strength and Conditioning All-American there.
She also has a kinesiology degree and teaches physical education at Canyon.

“I think I have first-hand knowledge on that and the girls can definitely benefit from it,” Haayer said.

Haayer said Johns is a genius when it comes to basketball and she learned a lot from him.

However, she will have her own brand of basketball that emphasizes defense.

“I will do my best,” Haayer said. “The expectations are so high. The girls (returning) got a taste of league titles. I hope they will be as hungry as I am.”
