Sparks from the broken axel of a vehicle towing a boat may have started a small brush fire in Castaic Sunday afternoon, according to emergency response crews.

The fire was knocked down in less than an hour.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m. Sunday, firefighters with the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a brush fire near the southbound lanes of Interstate 5, just north of Lake Hughes Road, said Supervisor Cheryl Sims.

“Right now it’s a quarter acre (burned) and running down hill,” she said shortly before 6 p.m., describing the fire.

“The Angeles National Forest is not sending an aircraft but we are sending an aircraft,” she said.

By 6:30 p.m., the fire had been extinguished, said Fire Department Inspector Bernard Peters.

According to reports received by the California Highway Patrol, the brush fire may have started when a vehicle towing a boat lost its axel, creating sparks.
