In what has become a monthly occurrence this year, vandals illegally entered Castaic Union School District classrooms recently, damaged property and, in the most recent case, rifled through the desks of at least two teachers, according to a report on file at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on Sunday.

Since December, vandals have used ketchup, Cheerios, blue paint, fire extinguishing chemicals and ‘Elmer’s Glue’ to damage carpets in Castaic classrooms and dumped glitter on the carpets in the most recent investigated incident of vandalism.

Sometime between 3:30 p.m. March 28 and 10:10 a.m. March 30, vandals entered Castaic Elementary School on Park Vista Drive through an open window, a deputy with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station wrote in his report.

A custodian who reported the vandalism told the deputy: “She noticed a window to classroom No. 28 partially open. When she went to inspect the security of the classroom door, she discovered it was unlocked.

“The informant believed the window was inadvertently left open by staff, which allowed the suspect(s) to enter the classroom and unlock the door from the inside when they left, leaving it unlocked,” the deputy reported.

Once inside, the vandals ransacked the desks of teachers in two classrooms, he wrote.

“I saw the teacher’s desk along the west facing wall had its drawers in the open position,” he wrote in his report.“The contents of the drawers appeared to have been rummaged through. I also noticed glitter had been spread all over the carpet of the classroom.

“Upon entering classroom number 27, I saw the (second) teacher’s desk along the west facing wall also had its drawers in the open position. The contents of the drawers appeared to have been rummaged through,” he wrote.

“The vandals tried to get into two other classrooms — Numbers 30 and 34 — having removed window screens, however, those windows themselves were locked,” he said.

The most recent incident of burglary and vandalism marks the fourth time in a three-month period in which vandals broke into a Castaic Union School District classroom and trashed it, according to sheriff’s deputies and school district officials.

In each case this year, the incidents of vandalism in Castaic classrooms have occurred on thelast weekend of each month.

On the weekend of Jan. 25, vandals trashed the special education preschool classroom on the campus of Castaic Middle School, school spokeswoman Lisa Bloom said at the time. Vandals then hit district classrooms again some time between 11 p.m. Feb. 21 and 6 a.m. Feb. 24.

On the weekend of Dec. 21, 2013, vandals trashed Castaic Elementary School, also using a fire extinguisher, district spokeswoman Lisa Bloom said.
