Sheriff's deputies who stopped to help a motorist with a smoking car soon found themselves arresting the driver, a Sylmar man, for possession of methamphetamines.

Edward Wichmann, 45, was arrested Monday after deputies learned he had a felony no-bail warrant for possession of a controlled substance, a felony $45,000 warrant for possession of a controlled substance, a felony $50,000 warrant for domestic battery and an $80,000 felony warrant for sales of a controlled substance, according to a sheriff's report.

The deputies were on patrol in the 31500 block of Castaic Road when they saw a car stopped in a traffic lane with smoke billowing from it, according to the report.

When they stopped to help Wichmann, they reportedly realized he was under the influence of something.

The deputies reportedly found "a significant amount" of methamphetamine, $2,000 in cash and items consistent with the sale of drugs in Wichmann's car.

Wichmann now faces charges of possession of a controlled substance for sale and a misdemeanor charge of being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Wichmann is being held without bail at the Inmate Reception Center in downtown Los Angeles and is set to appear in court this morning.
