A man being beaten up during a street fight in Canyon Country attempted to flee the scene in his vehicle and ran into a crowd of people, injuring a woman, a Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputy said Monday.

The fight broke out around 9 p.m. Sunday in the 17800 block of Deana Lane in the Jakes Way area of Canyon Country, Deputy Josh Dubin said.

“A 22-year-old man was apparently attacked and beaten by a group of people,” Dubin said Monday, “Apparently, he drove into a crowd of people, hitting a female and knocking her over.”

The woman was taken to an local hospital, he said.

The motorist, 22-year-old Canyon Country resident Michael Anthony McLaughlin, was charged with attempted murder and held at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station jail with bail set at $1 million.

McLaughlin, a food server, had been arrested Feb. 23 on a misdemeanor by Sheriff’s Department Transit Services Bureau deputies. He was released the same day, according to information maintained by the Sheriff’s Department’s Inmate Information Center.

A second man — Marcellus Holt, 23, also of Canyon Country — was also arrested in connection with the street fight and charged with assault with a deadly weapon causing grievous bodily injury.

Both men are scheduled to appear in San Fernando Superior Court Tuesday.

The condition of the woman was not available Monday.
