One coach described Hart senior Brayon Rodriguez as a silent quarterback on the field.

Players voted him as team MVP.

Now The Signal names him the 2013-14 All-Santa Clarita Valley Boys Soccer Player of the Year.

Rodriguez was, in many ways, an obvious choice for the honor this season. The midfielder was the most dynamic and reliable player on the best team in the SCV.

On a team full of talented players, like versatile defensive midfielder Riley Waldeck and offensive spark plug Derek Waldeck, Rodriguez was the one who made it all come together this season.

Hart boasted talented rosters and promising teams in recent years, but it always seemed to hit a snag once it came to league play.

The Hart Indians finished second, second and third in league the last three years.

But the frustration finally ended under the guidance of seniors like Rodriguez.

He scored a team-high 11 goals and assisted five others and helped lead Hart to a 15-6-3 record that included the team’s first Foothill crown since 2008 and an appearance in the CIF-Southern Section Division IV quarterfinals.

There were injuries to some key players early that left some doubt about the team’s ability to live up to its billing.

Would this be another year of disappointment for Hart?

Not with a rock like Rodriguez in the middle of it all.

This season will go down as one of the all-time greats for Hart. It’s right up there with the 2011 team, which was the last time Hart made it to a CIF quarterfinal.

Rodriguez’s older brother Uriel was named All-SCV Player of the Year at the conclusion of that season. The younger brother is following suit.

Hart head coach Adonay Jovel talked about how Brayon made the offense go. He created opportunities when his team needed a score and he was a distributor when his team needed to hold onto the lead and maintain possession.

Brayon, a student with a 4.0 GPA, was as cerebral as he was skilled on the field as well. He was a calming, stoic personality who kept everything in line.

It took a player like him to finally get Hart over the second and third place hump in league.

At the end of the season, Jovel asked the players to vote who they thought deserved player of the year.

It was Rodriguez in a landslide.

The Hart players got it right.
