Life Changing Events

While I never lost a family member to a tragedy as did the descendents of Titanic victims in today’s story, I did experience a series of back-to-back, non-related, life-challenging events several years ago that resulted in my making several changes in my life – all for the better.

The first began with my then unborn child. We nearly didn’t survive a life-threatening condition associated only with pregnancy. As a result, a priest was called upon the birth of my daughter and she later lost a kidney. But she lived. And I loved her like no other.

Just as I was hugely enjoying the healthy little person she was becoming at age 22 months, I was hit head-on by the drunk driver of a commercial vehicle in an auto collision. After two years of corrective surgeries and re-learning to walk, I remained grateful that I had so much good in my life. And that we were both still lucky to be alive.

Breaks weren’t coming our way, however, when I was diagnosed with breast cancer before my daughter turned age 4. Still, I felt immensely fortunate that the cancer was caught early and treated. I have remained cancer free for years.

Yet, I heard a voice inside my head. The message seemed to be that “I wasn’t listening.” Not listening to what?

Within six months, however, I realized that I not been listening to myself. I proceeded to make several major life changes all at once – any number of which have been said to be disruptive to a person’s life or emotional well-being.

Instead, I was delighted. And life only got better after that.

Judging by the writers who have been sending in their stories – and we have some great ones coming up - we know our readers have stories similar to mine. Stories where events in life greatly influenced who they became, what they did, or what paths they pursued.

Send us your story. Don’t worry about how polished your story might be – we’ll help!
