The race for the Santa Clarita City Council seat formerly occupied by Frank Ferry is expected to be decided Tuesday — a week after the election was held.

The uncounted ballots cast in last week’s election will be tallied on Tuesday, and members of the public are welcome to view the process in the City Council chambers at City Hall.

The count starts at 10 a.m. Tuesday with officials from the Santa Clarita City Clerk’s office tallying the verified vote-by-mail and provisional ballots that were received at the polls on Election Day.

As of Wednesday, city officials said they had 679 vote-by-mail ballots and 286 provisional ballots that needed to be reviewed and verified.

Those that are verified will constitute the deciding votes in an election that currently shows third-place candidate Dante Acosta and fourth-place candidate Alan Ferdman separated by only 46 votes.

Three other candidates — Gloria Mercado-Fortine, Duane Harte and Maria Gutzeit — are mathematically within grasp of the third seat.

Each of the remaining ballots could contain votes for up to three candidates.

The signatures on vote-by-mail ballots had to be checked against county databases to make sure they were valid, according to city spokeswoman Jessica Jackson.

If those signatures could not be verified, they were sent to the county for another look.

Provisional ballots, which are cast in person by voters whose names do not appear on the precinct lists where the ballot is submitted, were also reviewed by the county to make sure they were cast by people who are registered to vote in Santa Clarita.

The results of this year’s election will be ratified at the Santa Clarita City Council’s meeting April 22.
