Eternal optimist encore

Hello, Santa Clarita, it’s me, Brian the Eternal Optimist again. In my last letter I described Presidents Obama’s optimism and how he was not going to be a sap.

We as American taxpayers are the saps. Why? Look at AIG and how our tax dollars were handled by the last administration. You can’t blame President Obama’s administration for last year’s bailout, but the right will.

We own 80 percent of AIG and we, America, need to dictate our terms to these 21st century robber barons. There should be a 100 percent tax on bonuses. Re-regulate and impose new regulations on these institutions. Split up these banks/insurance companies/institutions like Teddy Roosevelt did with the robber barons of the early 20th century.

Now, a little optimism about earmarks, the boogeyman of the budget: If you listen to our colleagues on the right, they will call earmarks “pork” unless they are for projects in their district. They will lambaste them as an expansion of a socialist government programs, again, unless they are for projects in their district.

We, Santa Clarita, are benefiting from these earmarks, in jobs and infrastructure, put forward by the person most hated by the right, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Our own Congressman “Buck” McKeon does not oppose these earmarks and has a few of his own.

So, until we give the president the power to deal with them line by line we will still hear about them year after year.

I am very optimistic about what our president is trying to do. Again, I am no sap, and I know he can only do what the Constitution allows him. We, America, and Santa Clarita, should take a hard look in the mirror and make a decision about where we want America to go over the next few years. And about those wants and needs I mentioned in my last letter: fishing was great this last Sunday.
