Principal selection on tap for Wednesday Hart board meeting

Board members in the William S. Hart Union High School District are expected to tab the new principals of Valencia High School and West Ranch High School during their meeting Wednesday, according to officials.

The longtime principal of Valencia High School, Paul Priesz, as well as the principal of West Ranch High School, Bob Vincent, both announced their plans to retire earlier this year.

District spokeswoman Gail Pinsker said Tuesday that it is the practice of the district to hire from within for such openings.

This practice could create a scenario in which an existing principal, such as one from the junior high school ranks, is selected to lead one or both of the two high schools.

This would then require a search for replacements for the junior high school principal.

“It could create an immediate need to put out a call for one or two junior high school principals, depending on how the board decides,” Pinsker said.

The Hart district board meeting is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at the district’s offices, 21380 Centre Pointe Parkway.

The last time a principal was hired at a comprehensive high school in the Hart district was 2012, when Mike Kuhlman was selected to take over for the retiring Bob Messina at Canyon High School.

Prior to his post at Canyon, Kuhlman was principal at Placerita Junior High School.

The Hart district already replaced one administrator earlier this school year when Pete Fries, longtime principal at La Mesa Junior High School, retired in December.

That retirement set off a shuffling of administrators in the district that saw Michele Krantz, then the district’s director of professional development and special programs, take over at La Mesa.

Jill Shenberger, then-principal of Academy of the Canyons, replaced Krantz at the district while Pete Getz moved from Sequoia Charter School to take over as principal at Academy of the Canyons.

Brandi Davis, then a special education program specialist, took over for Getz at Sequoia.
