SACRAMENTO, CA - Senator Steve Knight (R-Antelope Valley) is proud to announce that the Microsoft YouthSpark TEALS program will be implemented in five local high schools in the coming school year. TEALS, which stands for Technology Education and Literacy in Schools, bridges the gap between the shortage of skilled computer science graduates and the growing demand for computer science job opportunities by bringing technology professionals into local classrooms.

These tech volunteers work in tandem with high school teachers to promote coding, technical and computer science literacy, with the goal of fostering self-sustaining computer science programs.

Being a TEALS volunteer will allow you to make a difference at a local high school and help young students realize their dreams. An informational meeting is being held this week for professionals who are interested in volunteering with TEALS. Vichi Jagannathan, the California Regional Director for the TEALS program, will tell you everything you need to know about supporting TEALS and volunteering with the program.

By the end of the session you will know specific steps you can take with TEALS to help young people experience computer science and broaden their opportunities for the future.

“There is a missing link within our schools, and computer science is that link. This great program will help ready students to enter the work force, and volunteers are crucial to the success of TEALS in our schools,” said Senator Knight.
