On the Beat Tennis: Rare times for a dynasty

With his 6-7 loss to Golden Valley’s Brandon Yu on Tuesday, Valencia’s No. 1 singles player Chad LeDuff saw his perfect streak through the Foothill League come to an end.

After going 25-0 against league opponents last year, LeDuff was working on another spotless season when Yu did what had been impossible up to this point.

It’s been a long time since the Valencia boys tennis team had to deal with this much adversity in its league schedule. With its 10-8 loss to West Ranch on April 3, which was the end of its 75-match Foothill League winning streak, and LeDuff’s first loss as a singles player, the Vikings appear more human than they’ve been in years.

But don’t think for a second that the Vikings are on a downswing.

LeDuff still has sets against two of the league’s best singles players in Hart’s Elliot Miller and West Ranch’s Harrison Collins coming up to remind people why he was the 2013 All-Santa Clarita Valley Boys Tennis Player of the Year as a sophomore.

And with a No. 2 singles player like Joey Fernicola, who would be a No. 1 option on most other league teams, and the doubles play of Sam Rebele and Ravi Jayanthi, the Vikings are still loaded.

Valencia travels to Canyon today and will face Hart on Tuesday.

But the match on everyone’s mind is the Vikings’ rematch against West Ranch on May 1.

Monday matches: West Ranch beat Hart 12-6 on Monday thanks to a strong performance from Harrison Collins who won his sets 6-0, 6-0 6-0.

The doubles teams of Jonathan Y. Lee and Chris Gaw and Logan Boute and Quincy Walter-Eze also swept their sets.

Lee and Gaw went 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 and Boute and Walter-Eze went 6-4, 6-2, 6-1.

Also on Monday, Valencia beat Brentwood 10-8 thanks to the No. 1 doubles team of Sam Rebele and Ravi Jayanthi sweeping their sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

The No. 3 team of Nick Joyce and Nick Davis won two sets.

On the singles side, both Chad LeDuff and Vinay Sharma won two sets apiece. LeDuff won 6-1, 6-0 and lost his third set 4-6. Sharma also won his first two sets (6-3, 6-4) and lost his third 6-7.

Rankings: West Ranch is still unbeaten in league play, but Valencia isn’t far behind. Golden Valley and Hart are fighting it out to see who will finish third, while Canyon is still looking for its first league win. Here’s our take on the best in league:

1. West Ranch

2. Valencia

3. Hart

4. Golden Valley

5. Saugus

6. Canyon

Match to watch: Golden Valley will host Hart today and we’ll see if the Grizzlies’ Brandon Yu can carry the momentum of his big win over Chad LeDuff into his set against Hart’s Elliot Miller. Hart is 4-3 in league play and Golden Valley is 3-4.
