Three people were arrested during a home probation check at a Canyon Country residence, including one on suspicion of elder abuse, a Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station official said Wednesday.

Deputies checking a home in the 27500 block of Bernina Avenue around 8 a.m. Tuesday discovered a replica firearm, nunchuks, some power tools that were believed stolen, some methamphetamine and a police scanner tuned to the frequencies of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, Deputy Josh Dubin said.

Deputies also discovered a 54-year-old woman who was apparently living in a room filled with trash and leftover, rotting food, according to Dubin.

Deputies also noted the smell of urine and feces in the room, he said.

That woman was transported to a hospital for treatment and adult protective services were contacted, Dubin said.

Deputies arrested three people, including Gina Denike, a 50-year-old Canyon Country resident, on suspicion of elder abuse, the deputy said. The 54-year-old woman was Denike’s dependent, he said.

Denike was also arrested on suspicion of receiving stolen property, possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of methamphetamine, possession of narcotics paraphernalia and unlawful use of a police scanner.

Melissa Johnson, 34, of Canyon Country was arrested for investigation of possession of methamphetamine and possession of narcotics paraphernalia, Dubin said.

Joshua Bateman, 37, was arrested on an alleged probation violation, according to Dubin.

As of Wednesday, Dubin said the investigation is ongoing and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office had not made a determination on what charges to pursue against the trio.
