A week after finding the body of a man inside a burning Newhall apartment, investigators with the county Coroner’s Department have still to identify the victim, a department spokesman said Monday.

“He’s still John Doe number 96,” said Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Department. “We have no identification yet,” he said. “The body was charred.”

An autopsy was done on the man’s body Thursday, but investigators have “deferred” the cause of his death.

“It came in as accidental,” Corral said.

The case, however, is being investigated by Detective Kenneth Clark of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.

On April 28, shortly before 11:30 p.m., firefighters with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station were dispatched to the 26700 block of North Oak Crossing Road in Newhall for reports of an apartment fire.

Firefighters arriving at the single-story apartment complex found smoke and fire showing from the dwelling, said Fire Department Inspector Melanie Flores said at the time of the fire.

Flores said the apartment was in “extreme pack rat conditions.”
