Connie Worden-Roberts, one of the Santa Clarita Valley’s most tireless and effective volunteer leaders who served on the city formation committee and on its first Planning Commission, will be honored for a lifetime of achievement Friday at a special event in Newhall.

Worden-Roberts, who helped found or develop local organizations with roles ranging from business advocacy to nonprofit to citizen activist, will receive a Lifetime of Achievement award at Hart Hall, located inside William S. Hart Park, at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

“Connie has served so many so well for so long, she deserves to be recognized for her lifetime of dedication to Santa Clarita,” Mayor Laurene Weste said in a statement.

Worden-Roberts personally collected 2,000 of the 24,000 signatures needed for the petition to form the city of Santa Clarita in the 1980s. She recalls the formation committee seeking a 70-mile boundary forSanta Clarita and receiving a 39-square mile city instead.

“We were very proud that when the vote was taken, there was an overwhelming vote to favor the city formation and at the same time, elect the city mothers and fathers for the City Council,” recounts Worden-Roberts in the city’s 20th Anniversary History Book.

She also chaired numerous transportation committees in the Santa Clarita Valley and served on local boards including the Chamber of Commerce, Valley Industrial Association, Zonta, Friends of Hart Park and the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley.

She established the Citizen Advisory Group to monitor and hold accountable the environmental cleanup under way at the contaminated Whittaker-Bermite site.

The tribute event for Worden-Roberts is free and open to the community. For more information, contact the city at 661-255-4314.
