Hold yourself to a higher standard

I have been reading the arguments in the letters to the editor section for this past week relating to Donald Sterling and his racist comments.

On Thursday, I could not believe what I read in The Mighty Signal.

Are adults really saying, “Well, if they can say it, why can’t we?”

How about this: Hold yourself to a higher standard regardless of what Donald Sterling, Magic Johnson or anyone says or writes.

Yes, Donald Sterling’s comments were not exactly what we should hear from a team owner, but at the same time he broke no law, he spoke in a private conversation and he has his own cross to bear.

I am not endorsing his comments or any of the letters written. What I am doing is encouraging people to live up to their own standards regardless of what others say and do.

I teach high school government, and we have been on this story since its inception.

The First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech, not freedom of speech until it offends one class of people or the other.

Let the comments of all these bigots stand on their own — and how about the rest of us holding ourselves to standards our mothers and our kids would be proud of.

Racism is racism, no matter who it comes from and under any context.

Instead of pointing out people who have said racist statements, how about us setting a standard that we can all be proud to embrace?
