Welcome to stage one of the high school track and field postseason.

All six Foothill League schools have athletes competing at two different locations in today’s CIF-Southern Section prelims.

Valencia and West Ranch athletes are at the Division I prelims at Trabuco Hills High School in Mission Viejo today while Canyon, Golden Valley, Hart and Saugus are at the Division II prelims at Moorpark High School today.

Field events begin at 11 a.m. at both locations with running events starting off at noon.

Several local athletes will participate, so let’s narrow it down to the ones with the best chances to advance to the CIF-SS finals the following Saturday at Cerritos College.

In each event, nine people will qualify for finals, including all heat winners.

At Moorpark: If all goes as planned, Canyon has a good chance to lead all local teams in CIF finalist qualifiers.

Canyon’s 4x100-meter sprint relay team comes in with one of the top times in Division II, with Cole Mears as the headliner of the group.

Mears also has a chance to move on individually in the 100 and 200.

Other likely qualifiers from Canyon include Brett Molster, who is looking to improve on his sixth-place finish at CIF finals last year.

In addition, Jeremy Kimmer (pole vault) and Jarrett Davidson (110 and 300 hurdles) are both looking for repeat CIF finalist appearances.

Kimmer went to the state meet in the high jump last year.

Canyon’s Steven Childs (long jump) is looking for his first finals appearance.

There are others who could potentially qualify in multiple events as well.

Golden Valley thrower Samiyah Hawkins should be in good shape in both the shot put and discus. Teammate and fellow thrower Nikaela Harris is also vying for a spot in the shot put finals.

Golden Valley is looking to make noise once again with its girls 4x400 relay team, which finished second in the CIF finals last year. Though both girls relay teams come into the day with top-notch marks, Golden Valley’s 4x100 team took a hit when start sprinter Azaria Hill suffered a season-ending hamstring injury last week at Foothill League finals.

Saugus has four potential distance runners looking to advance, including Ashley Heys who is coming off a dramatic and narrow Foothill finals victory over Canyon’s Natalie Rodriguez in the 3,200.

Both Heys and Rodriguez should advance today.

Saugus also has Alex Pearson in the 1,600, and both Brian Zabilski and Jordan Serrano in the 3,200.

Other potential qualifiers for Saugus include Katie O’Brien (discus), Avery Schulhofer (100) and the boys 4x400 relay team.

Hart should place Bailey James into the 1,600 finals, Alex Bernal in the 800 finals with Bailey Pate (800) and Andrew Orona (3,200) as possible qualifiers.

At Trabuco Hills: In the Division I meet, West Ranch’s Marisa Magsarili was a CIF finalist in the 800 last year, but she could move on in both the 800 and 1,600 this time around.

Her teammate Nathan Bultman shouldn’t have trouble making it through in both the shot put and discus with the kind of marks he’s posted all season long.

Max Cawley (triple jump) and Ashton Garcia (1,600) have also shown marks worthy of the CIF finals.

For Valencia, both Nick Jones (400) and Briana Pica (pole vault) are looking repeat appearances in the finals.

Pica advances all the way to the CIF-SS Masters Meet last year.
