SCCS softball lives to play another day

With her adrenaline pumping, Santa Clarita Christian sophomore Shelby Boswell felt like she could keep pitching all day long.

But it turned out nine innings of one-hit ball was enough to get the SCCS Cardinals a 1-0 extra-innings win over California Military Institute in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division VII playoffs on Tuesday at the William S. Hart PONY Complex.

“The defense kept us in it,” Boswell said. “We just kept the momentum going the whole time.”

Boswell struck out eight and walked one in the game, which ended on Lauren Lockhart’s game-winning RBI double in that brought home Hailey Aguilar from third base in the ninth.

“I felt like I was going to have a heart attack the whole game,” Lockhart said.

Lockhart’s blooper into center field was one of just four SCCS hits in the game off CMI pitcher Emma Quiroz. The sophomore pitcher also tossed all nine innings and struck out 17 along the way.

Kimberly Curry had the Cardinals’ only other hit, a double in the third inning.

Aguilar managed to hit two doubles off Quiroz, including one to left field to start the ninth-inning rally.

She scooted to third base on a wild pitch to set up the clinching hit over a CMI (9-6), which finished third place in the Warrior League.

“It was a rush of emotions,” Boswell said of watching the final hit land safely. “Insane. It was indescribable.”

The win keeps an impressive season alive for the Cardinals (16-3), who finished undefeated in the Heritage League.

Because SCCS has been so dominant most the season, it has only played in one ball game decided by a single run all season — an 8-7 win over Desert Christian on March 20.

“This was definitely the first game we’ve had with this type of intensity,” said SCCS head coach Ali Aguilar.

It appears the Cardinals are fine at handling pressure as well.

In the second round on Thursday, SCCS faces the winner of Bloomington Christian-Arrowhead Christian.
