On the Beat Golf: The Braden and Aden combination

We’ve sort of neglected the play of Saugus’ Braden and Aden combo because of two other great Foothill League stories this year — Golden Valley sophomore Jonathan Kang’s ascension to the top of the Foothill League and Hart’s displacing six-time champion West Ranch as league champion.

But Braden Lewis and Aden De Los Reyes have been two of the better golfers in the SCV in 2014.

We profiled Lewis last year — a story in which we described his generally quiet nature and how he expressed himself on the golf course with loud pants and by even painting his driver pink because of his admiration of Bubba Watson.

Lewis has now finished fourth, third and second overall in the Foothill League respectively in the last three years.

Lewis and De Los Reyes each shot 1-under 71s on May 11 at the CIF-Southern Section Northern Individual Regional at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard to advance in the postseason.

Lewis and De Los Reyes lead a group, including Kang and Hart’s Michael Lotta, of four Santa Clarita Valley golfers who will compete at the CIF-Southern Section Individual Championship on Tuesday at Mission Lakes Country Club in Desert Hot Springs.

The top 28 individual golfers will advance to the June 2 CIF/SCGA Southern State Regional Championship — or think of it as the Southern California championship.

That match will be played at Pasadena’s Brookside Golf Club.

Lewis is playing the best of any prep golfer right now in the SCV.

On Monday, he shot a 2-over 74 at the CIF-SS Central Coast Team Divisional.

Even-par 72 was the cut last year at the same stage of individual playoff competition so that’s at least the number the locals will aim for on Tuesday.

Freshman tries: West Ranch freshman Ashley Mayhall, who finished second overall in Foothill League play in 2013, was in Rumson, N.J. on Wednesday at a Sectional Qualifier for the U.S. Women’s Open.

She did not qualify, as the cut for the 36-hole qualifier was 147.

Holen rollin: West Ranch High graduate J.J. Holen, who we featured in last week’s On the Beat, advanced to the California Amateur Championship after finishing with a 2-under 70 at Wednesday’s qualifier at Crystalaire Country Club in Llano.

The California Amateur will be played June 16-21 at La Costa Resort in Carlsbad.

College of the Canyons golfer Sidney Wolf shot a qualifier best 3-under 69 and his COC teammates Michael Stewart and Howard Bernstein also qualified with even-par 72s.

Holen, a Long Beach State junior, has a busy June, as he will also play in a U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier on June 2 as well.
