Santa Clarita Valley residents have a number of options for remembrance and recreation this Memorial Day.

SCV Veterans Memorial Inc. and Eternal Valley Memorial Park are hosting their annual Memorial Day Celebration at Eternal Valley at 10 a.m on Monday.

“(We want to) honor our veterans,” said Duane Harte, president of SCV Veterans Memorial Inc., “Not specifically SCV veterans but all veterans.”

The program commences with a flyover by the Condor Squadron and includes two speakers, music and a Betsy Ross impersonator, among other things.

At its conclusion, those in attendance can climb the hill and listen to the reading of the names on the Veterans’ Memorial Wall.

Hot dogs and drinks will be served.

Immediately following the ceremony, the community is invited to American Legion Post 507 at 24527 Spruce St. in Newhall for a free luncheon.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6885 (16208 Sierra Hwy. in Canyon Country) is also holding a lunch with hamburgers and hot dogs at no charge from 1-5 p.m.

As far as recreation goes, Santa Clarita Aquatics Center will be open from 12-5 p.m. with $6 admission for those 18-54 years of age, $4 for minors and seniors.

And for bigger water slides, Six Flags Hurricane Harbor’s opening day was Saturday, and it will be open through Memorial Day. Park hours are 10:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. with general admission set at $39.99 at the door.

What you can’t do, however, on Memorial Day is return a book to one of the three Santa Clarita Public Library branches, which will be closed all day.
