LOS ANGELES (AP) — Three 14-year-old girls were hospitalized Wednesday after a car crashed into them at a North Hollywood crosswalk.

California Highway Patrol Officer Leland Tang said the three were struck while walking back to school from a physical education class at a nearby park. Tang said a Toyota Prius failed to stop at a light on the U.S. 170 freeway off-ramp, hitting the girls before colliding with another vehicle.

The Prius' driver told investigators he could not stop the car because its brakes failed. Tang said forensic analysis of the vehicle will confirm the driver's account.

One of the teenage girls is on life support at an area trauma center and the other two girls are in serious condition. The 48-year-old Prius driver was also hospitalized.
