Tyler Hawkins, a 25-year-old graduate of Canyon High School who was a standout linebacker on Harry Welch’s 2005 championship team and won an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, comes home on leave this week, and his parents want to throw him a surprise party.

All Tyler’s friends are invited – along with the rest of the Santa Clarita Valley.

“We’re just hoping that a lot of his friends show up so that he can reconnect and show our appreciation,” said Bill Hawkins, Tyler’s father, “We are obviously very, very proud of him.”

According to Bill Hawkins, the family has asked Tyler to come and play with the family band at Route 66 Classic Grill Wednesday night, but that is a ruse to get him to the 6 p.m. surprise party.

City Councilman Dante Acosta will be there to present Hawkins with a proclamation from the city, and George Thomas, owner of Route 66, says he’s arranged a fly-by from the “Condor Squadron” out of Van Nuys airport, which honors World War II fighter pilots through flight and remembrance.

According to Thomas, Tyler is well known in Canyon Country for joining the Navy, as well as being Canyon’s standout 5-foot-9, 180-pound linebacker on the Cowboys’ Southern Section Division II championship team coached by Harry Welch in 2005.

His father said people in the community will be excited to see Tyler as well.

“As far as the adults in his life, they are just very proud of him and want to show their appreciation,” said Hawkins.
