When talking about the Santa Clarita Fourth of July Parade’s “Pooper Scooper” contest, it may be best to avoid all puns.

Parade committee chairwoman Linda Storli said organizers thought up the contest as a fun way to accomplish a necessary task: collecting the excrement left behind by the annual event’s equestrian entries.

Contestants with their “scoopers” will meet at Veteran’s Plaza in Newhall at 8:15 a.m. on the Fourth of July. They’ll then be separated into groups that will follow the first three divisions of the parade.

Organizers said entries can be any “device that can be pushed/pulled or driven down the street so that the pusher can pick up ...poop.”

As for the money, contestants will be judged on how well-decorated their “scooper” is. The first place winnner will receive a $100 prize; second place wins $50; and the third-place prize is $25.

The winnings will be funded by parade entry fees and awarded at Old Town Newhall Library at 12:30 p.m. the day of the parade, organizers said.

Storli said the dung used to be picked up by a waste management company, but the chore eventually fell to a city official who described the job as “not fun.” The potential solution: “Pooper Scooper.”

“I don’t know if we’ll have three (scoopers) or 25,” Storli said. Hopefully, we get some.”

If contestants don’t turn out, Storli foresees the California Rangers, the parade’s largest riding group, probably taking care of what’s left behind.

Community members interested in entering the contest are encouraged to RSVP by calling Lillian Shaw, a parade committee member, at 661-803-7845. Entry forms and liability waivers are necessary to participate and are available online.

The parade begins at 9 a.m. in downtown Newhall.
