Authorities shut down southbound lanes of Interstate 5 for about five hours early Saturday morning following a three-vehicle crash that left six people with varying injuries, none of them life-threatening.

The 5:30 a.m. crash occurred when a box truck carrying six people slammed into two big rigs at Magic Mountain Parkway then flipped onto its side.

The six people sustained injuries ranging from “scrapes and bruises” to “major” and were transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Priessman said.

Neither of the drivers of the two big rigs were hurt. No update on the victims’ conditions was immediately available, Priessman said.

The CHP shut down the southbound lanes on Interstate 5 but reopened them at about 10:30 a.m., he said,

Priessman noted that, due to a construction project on the southbound Golden State, only the No. 1 lane of the freeway was open at the time of the crash.

“We don’t know why” the box truck hit the other two vehicles, Priessman said, but the collision is under investigation.
