Many more bike trails in the works for Santa Clarita

A recent letter writer complimented Santa Clarita’s trail system and inquired as to whether the city will be adding more trails, specifically near the Newhall Ranch Road underpass.

Good news; the answer is yes. The following trails are planned for Santa Clarita to add to our more than 76-mile trail system:

  •  Golden Valley Road to Soledad Connector, crossing down to Soledad Canyon Road; this project is currently in design;
  •  Santa Clara River Trail (north side of the riverbank) from River Village Park to Golden Valley Road at Fallen Warrior’s Bridge. These 1.5 miles of trail to open in December;
  •  Santa Clara River Trail: this provides for the extension of another 1.5 miles of trail east of Fallen Warrior’s Bridge; grading is in progress for construction in 2015.
  •  Golden Valley Road approximately one mile from fire station northeast toward Plum Canyon; grading is in progress for construction in 2015;
  •  McBean Parkway Bridge bike path and connectors to open later this summer. This will also provide a new underpass for McBean on the north side of the river, creating numerous new loop opportunities; this is a huge trail benefit;
  •  A new Class 1 bike path will be added as part of the widening of the Golden Valley Road bridge over Highway 14 and is expected to be under way in early 2015.

As for the Newhall Ranch Road trail, right now we have plans to enhance Newhall Ranch Road between Avenue Tibbitts and McBean Parkway, which currently narrows from eight lanes to six.

The proposed bridge widening will resolve the traffic “bottleneck,” add a multi-use path to connect the existing trails along Newhall Ranch Road, and provide a trail connection to the San Francisquito Creek Trail on the west side of the bridge.

Lighting to both sides of the bridge and landscaped medians will be included as part of the project.

The design contract for the Newhall Ranch Road bridge-widening project, which includes the trail connection to the San Francisquito Creek Trail on the west side of this bridge, was awarded at the June 24 City Council meeting.

This is a federally funded project and therefore Caltrans approval will be required at each phase of the project.

The design and environmental process will begin next month. Construction for this project is expected to take a year and will begin in spring 2016.

Happy trails, Santa Clarita. You’re the best!
