Another rabid bat has turned up locally, this one in Canyon Country, bringing the total found year-to-date in the Santa Clarita Valley to five.

The latest bat was found alive on the ground outside a home in Canyon Country, according to a report dated Wednesday from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

Three rabid bats have been discovered in Newhall this year, according to county records. Two of those were found in June — one was discovered inside a garage and the other was located on a patio.

Another was found on the ground in April after being seen hanging on the outside wall at a residence during the day.

One bat was found dead in a swimming pool in Agua Dulce in February.

While the latest bat was the fifth discovered in the Santa Clarita Valley, it was the 13th that has been found in the county so far this year.

Other bats have been found in Bradbury, Monrovia, Topanga, Palmdale and various areas of Los Angeles.

A person was bitten by a rabid bat in June in Mar Vista while trying to wrest the bat away from a dog.

That person sought medical attention and the dog was re-vaccinated and quarantined for a month, according to county records.

The Santa Clarita Valley typically sees a high number of the confirmed rabid bat cases in the county because of its high bat population, according to officials.

For instance, 14 of the 34 rabid bats found in Los Angeles County last year were located in the Santa Clarita Valley.
While most bats do not have rabies, county health officials say ones found lying on the ground or seen flying around during the day may be rabid.

Residents are warned not to touch such animals and urged to call the county Animal Control department.
