Reject conservative extremism

Local paranoid "educators" like Lynn Vakay who gush about tea bag parties like some Mad Hatter character right out of "Alice in Wonderland" are another reminder to us all why conservatives have their history, their hearts, or their minds in the wrong place for America ("Right Here, Right Now," April 17).

It was evident that Americans have rejected the extremism that had, for eight years, threatened our country's stability and core values. The collective population has grown a brain and what a relief it is.

Some said it was too late; that between the destruction of our country's reputation under Bush, including the overwhelmingly failed foreign policies, the nonexistent attention to domestic issues, the shamefulness of sending thousands of young Americans to their deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq and finally, the almost complete ruin and collapse of the American economic system under the Bush administration, our country had become an absolute failure. It would become like ancient Rome, be buried and gone, an abysmal memory in some future history book.

Well, "failure" can describe many things except when the American spirit prevails and the majority decides that right-wing extremism, stupid religious doctrines, and an idiot for a president will no longer represent this country.

More than ever Americans should reject the extremism that has tarnished our country's ability to engage in intelligent discussions with friends and foes around the world, to disseminate complex information that befuddled and overwhelmed the last White House occupant.

Ms. Vakay, I will pray as you requested in your column - for you. I hope you turn off "American Idol," skip Rush's show and actually read some mainstream news sources.
