Big government waste

Liberals evidently love big government. Bigger government programs, they say, will lift up the poor and solve all our problems.

But they have it all twisted. Big government equals big power. Study history, and you’ll easily see that the powerful, first and foremost, take care of themselves. Reliance on government doesn’t lift people up — it makes them dependent. When you’re dependent, you have less liberty.

Your “Full Speed to Port!” column writers are either missing the point or purposefully misinterpreting the message of the tax day tea parties. (And, by the way, the story and photo you ran April 16, ‘All taxed out at ‘“Tea Party,”’ did not reflect attendance; (by my estimate there were) easily more than 1,000 citizens lining Valencia Boulevard.)

It’s fair to say that all Americans accept the fact that tax dollars are needed for our military, for roads, judges, police, teachers and more.

But unlike our liberal brethren, we conservatives are willing to recognize, and get angry about, the waste of our hard-earned money.

The escalating level of fraud, greed and centralized power in government both infuriates and frightens me and my family. Earmarks, bank bailouts, White House “czars,” trillions of dollars being printed that will devalue our currency and leave our grandchildren buried in taxes simply to pay interest to the Chinese  that’s a formula for the demise of liberty.

What is the purpose of government? Is it to fund studies of pig excrement odor or to ensure bonuses for executives not only at AIG, but also at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac? How about $198 million to Filipino World War II veterans (most of whom don’t live in the United States)? Just a few examples from the recent federal stimulus bill.

We now have layer upon layer of bureaucracy far beyond what the Founding Fathers ever envisioned to fall within the scope of government. And we can’t afford it. It’s time to put our legislators, at every level, on a diet. And it’s time for the Fair Tax Act to save our U.S. economy.
