Homicide detectives have identified the murder victim whose skeletal remains were found near Gorman, a detective heading up the investigation said Monday.

The man whose skeleton was found on a charred hillside near Gorman was 32-year-old Ricardo Lopez of the Athens area of Los Angeles, homicide Detective Karen Shonka said.

“He was identified through DNA from his femur,” Shonka said. “We met with the man’s family on Thursday.”

Lopez was reported missing by his family Feb. 9, 2011, Shonka said.

His skeletal remains of Lopez were found in March on a charred hillside near Gorman after a brush fire denuded the area.

“He told his mother that he was going to meet some friends and he never returned,” Shonka said.

Detectives are still looking for the car he drove that day, which belonged to his mother — a 2003 gold-colored Ford Focus.

“He left his home Feb. 6, which was Superbowl Sunday,” Shonka said. “We’re just going to have to get in contact with any friends he had.”

Coroner’s investigators revealed Sunday that the decomposed body found in mid-March by firefighters battling a 100-acre brush fire is that of a 32-year-old Hispanic man.

Since March 17, when Shonka said he was the victim of foul play, Lopez was identified only as John Doe No. 59.

Shonka and other detectives scoured the charred remains of a hillside in Gorman looking for clues after the body was discovered. They had ruled the death a homicide and were collecting bits of bone and other material in a bid to find out who the victim was and what killed him.

“There were some injuries to the skull and at least one that leads us to believe a firearm was involved,” the detective said.

On Monday, Shonka said she was still waiting on the coroner’s report.
