Porto’s officials say a new location hasn’t been changed.

Over the past year, eager fans of Porto’s Bakery & Café have spread rumors that the family-owned Glendale eatery is opening at every spot in which a restaurant operation closes in Santa Clarita.

Last week, Porto’s enthusiasts reported through Facebook that the restaurant was opening in the space on McBean Parkway vacated by the Elephant Bar restaurant.

And last week’s rumor spread like wildfire in this overheated city.

But, according to those who might be in the know, the rumor isn’t true – much to the disappointment of the café’s fans.

“It only takes one person to mock up a photo of Elephant Bar and slap Porto’s logo on it and the next thing you know, it’s all over town,” said a source who is involved with the property.

There isn’t any basis to the story, he said.

Prior to the latest report, fans of the eatery reported it was opening in the spot formerly occupied by Game Day – also not true.

No notice has been given to the city of Santa Clarita nor have any permits been pulled, said one official last week.

And the broker handling the space formerly occupied by Elephant Bar denied the rumor saying his firm hasn’t even started marketing the restaurant space yet.

Even the restaurant itself, with cafes in Glendale, Burbank and Downey, resorted to Facebook to deny the rumor.

“We are humbled by all the excitement for a possible 4th bakery in Santa Clarita Valley. At this point, the new location hasn’t been chosen...yet,” the Facebook posting read.

Officials with the city have had discussions with Porto’s and they are interested in the Santa Clarita market, said Jason Crawford, economic development manager for the city.

But the restaurant has identified other locations it wants to open in first, he said.
