A Valencia registered sex offender, accused of annoying a young girl at a Santa Clarita Valley department store, has accepted a deal offered by prosecutors calling for a 12-year prison term, court officials said Thursday.

Yale Joseph Yurman, 71, appeared Thursday in San Fernando Superior Court as prospective jurors were being chosen for his trial, said Deputy District Attorney Emily Cole of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.

Yurman entered a plea of no contest, she said, to a single felony charge of annoying or molesting a child under 18 years of age while having a prior sex crime conviction.

Cole offered Yurman a deal of 12 years in state prison.

He entered his plea as his jury was being selected, she said.

Yurman, one of more than 50 sex offenders registered with the California Department of Justice as living in the Santa Clarita Valley, was ordered to stand trial in October 2013.

Sheriff’s detectives arrested him June 19, 2013, after investigating reports of a man following a young girl and videotaping her while she was walking around inside Target on Magic Mountain Parkway in Valencia.

Detectives working with Target’s loss prevention personnel were able to identify the suspect as Yurman. They subsequently served a search warrant on his house in the 23700 block of Hickory Court in Valencia.

Inside they found what they said is evidence showing Yurman followed young girls and videotaped them on several occasions at three locations in the Santa Clarita Valley: Target, Walmart and Real Life Church in Valencia.

They also found evidence of Yurman following girls on the Santa Monica pier, investigators reported.

Yurman was charged July 10, 2013, on suspicion of having annoyed a child, a felony. Bail was set at $1 million, and he remained in custody awaiting the outcome of his trial.
