Alison Lee starts strong at U.S. Women's Amateur

If Alison Lee’s goal is to replicate her impressive performance from last year’s U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, she’s off to a good start this year.

The Valencia High graduate shot a 1-under 69 in her opening round at the U.S. Women’s Am on Monday at Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, N.Y.

That puts her tied for fourth place in a field of 156 golfers that began the tournament.

Last year at the event, she ended up tied for fifth after two rounds of stroke play and went on to advance to the semifinals of the match play portion of the competition, losing to eventual champion Emma Talley.

The 19-year-old UCLA sophomore has a long way to go to get to that point, but she’s in good shape as one of just seven players under par after Monday’s round.

She birdied four holes on the par-70 course to offset three bogeys during a five-hole stretch from holes 2 to 6.

Lee is coming off a decorated freshman golf season at UCLA, during which she won the Pac-12 championship and was named Women’s Golf Coaches Association national Freshman of the Year.

She also won the North & South Women’s Amateur title three weeks ago and was a member of the victorious U.S. Curtis Cup team in June.

In July, Lee announced that she was going to compete in LPGA Qualifying School, which opened up the possibility of her turning professional early instead of finishing her eligibility at UCLA.

Q-School begins on Aug. 26.

But this week the focus is on the U.S. Women’s Am, potentially her last crack at the prestigious event. She’ll tee off at 4:30 a.m. Pacific Time today for her second round of stroke play.

As long as she finishes in the top 64 at the end of today’s round, she’ll move on to the match play tournament.

The tournament concludes with the championship round on Sunday.
