Ballot language needs to change

An article in The Signal July 3, 2014, quoted the proposed ballot language for the billboard referendum on November’s ballot: “Shall Ordinance No. 14-02 adopting a Development Agreement with Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) for the removal of 62 advertisement structures, within the city, by Metro or any other means, and construction and operation of three digital billboards, adjacent to Interstate 5 and State Route 14 freeways, and the dedication to the city of revenue received from digital billboards, which creates an ongoing revenue stream, be adopted?”

Here are my objections:

“...dedication to the city of revenue...” It is my understanding that the city will be receiving a portion of the revenue.

The percentage should be disclosed; this is a not-too-subtle attempt to sway voters.

“...ongoing revenue stream...” This is also misleading and provided to encourage voters to concentrate on revenue that is yet to be disclosed.

If the city is so desperate for income, why did the City Council opt for the estimated cost of $208,000 (according to the council’s agenda report) to place the issue on the ballot?

“...billboards ... and State Route 14...” It was my impression that this digital billboard would not be permitted, since this is a wildlife corridor and the constant glow would be detrimental to wildlife.

“...removal of 62 advertisement structures...” The city has already paid Edwards Outdoor Advertising several million dollars to remove 47 of its billboards.

The ballot language should reflect the correct number of billboards in question.

The language of the measure should end with “...State Route 14 freeways.” The information following is misleading and must be removed.

How do the citizens of Santa Clarita Valley make this happen?
