Clean up carbon

I understand that our new president has set an agenda to deal with climate issues. But I think we need to take a look at some issues that have led us to this point.

I want our leaders to know that here in Santa Clarita, we support bold action on climate and energy, including a cap on carbon pollution.

Capping carbon pollution will ignite the transition to clean energy, end our dependence on dirty fossil fuels, and put America on a path toward economic recovery.

I see a huge emphasis placed on solar and wind energy technology. But what is being left out is the enormous potential that lies right off our coast in the whole of California — it has to do with wave energy.

Wave energy is constant, goes both in and out with the tide, is limitless, and can be harnessed with a minimum of distress to animal life, marine life and humans.

I think all of this begins with a cap on carbon pollution and with fines to heavy industries known to be offenders (requiring scrubbers on all emissions put into our skies). I think we need to strengthen our clean-air and clean-water policies, and put some teeth back into the Environmental Protection Agency.

Consumers and businesses will benefit from stable energy prices, and with greater energy efficiency, we can get more from the energy we have, which will mean lower electricity bills.

The cap on carbon pollution has the potential of creating many jobs, and here in Los Angeles County where it is reported that one-in-five people is without work, this is important. I should think it would benefit out-of-work construction workers devastated by the housing crash.

Now is the time for action. The economy can’t wait. The climate crisis can’t wait. The alternatives exist; it is up to us all to push for their adoption and use.

I think we must also work to limit our own personal carbon footprints as well. This begins at home!
