April is a funny month for me - on one hand, it is tax month (both property taxes and federal and state income taxes are due) on the other hand, the Cowboy Festival rides into town during the last weekend of the month. As anyone who has read this column for any length of time knows, the Cowboy Festival is my favorite event of the year! So mosey on over to Melody Ranch the weekend of April 26-27 for some authentic cowboy grub, shopping and great Western music. For more information visit

A Night on the Diamond
It will be an ode to "America's Pastime" - baseball, when the 37th Annual SCV Boys & Girls Club Benefit Auction is held Saturday, June 14 at the Mann BioMedical Park in Valencia. Greg and Chell Amsler will co-chair this popular SCV event. A kickoff afternoon was held March 26 in Newhall Park, behind the Newhall Boys & Girls Club facility.

The kickoff featured former Dodger baseball greats Eddie Murray and Bill Russell, along with ex-Dodger general manager Kevin Malone, giving instruction to children from the B&G Club on baseball basics. It was the perfect afternoon event and there were plenty of baseballs for autographs - which the children lined up for in droves. For more information about the auction, which benefits the SCV Boys & Girls Club (which serves more than 3,500 children and operates clubhouses in Newhall and Canyon Country, with a satellite club in Val Verde), visit

Spring Fling
The Assistance League of Santa Clarita held a "Spring Fling" April 6 to introduce potential new members to the philanthropic organization.

The event was held at the beautiful Newhall home of Chris and Jeannie Carpenter. Among those seen at the event (which attracted nearly 60 guests) were Linda Lambourne, Betty Rabin-Fung (the Assistance League of Santa Clarita nominee for 2008 SCV Woman of the Year), Bonnie Phillips, Assistance League President Cheryl Carlson, Diane Trautman, Mel Johnson, Chris Tanner, Louise Eldering, Chris Schultz and Debbie Heys. For more information about the Assistance League and the many wonderful programs they provide in the SCV, call (661) 255-1991 or e-mail
