Tea-partiers misguided

Thank you for pointing out in the tea party article that Reagan actually increased taxes while he was Governor ("All taxed out at ‘Tea Party,' April 16).

I wonder how many of these people drove to their tea parties on roads funded and built by the taxes they and their parents paid. Maybe they would have preferred dirt trails with no traffic controls, or better yet, toll booths at every turn.

I wonder how many of them have a parent on Social Security, spent a day at a park, called the police, flushed a toilet, attended a school or any of the myriad daily activities available because we have taxation.

The very right-wing Faux News is piped into their homes via cable systems that were laid with taxpayer infrastructure funding so they wouldn't have to pay thousands of dollars to connect cable to their homes. And every one of those public works provided jobs and income to people who went out and bought groceries, televisions, cars and homes.

People built businesses supplying materials and labor, and in turn created even more jobs and incomes. It is a very necessary cycle, and the return on the dollars spent has been huge. Could we have Las Vegas without Hoover Dam?

Our infrastructure is falling apart due to the neglect created when the Reagan regime vilified government and initiated the corporate theft of our country's commons.

Somehow, the Republican Party has convinced ordinary people that the government does not work for them, when in fact, it is the very thing that has made this country what it is and made it possible for them to live the lives they do.

Why? Because we are the government. It is by the people, for the people. It is high time we reinvest in our infrastructure and start putting our country first again.

I think it is fair to say the Reagan Revolution has been an abject failure. Yet the right continues to promote and expand this idea by swiping the bread while getting the rest of us to fight over the crumbs. Obama has had 101 days in office, and can hardly be blamed for the mess that has taken 30 years to create, yet most of them were out there with anti-Obama signs on April 15.

It is deplorable that the bait-and-switch works with these people.

Maybe they would have us become a country like Somalia or Haiti, where the richest are able to keep everything, if you happen to be poor, well, sorry, Charlie. No help at all for you. You either become a pirate or starve.

Middle class? Try to find one in Somalia. Would they have a return to a society that was 18th century France, where Marie Antoinette infamously said of the poor, "Let them eat cake?"

It is high time we stopped the petty partisan bickering and get behind some solutions to this mess. Instead of standing there holding a sign chanting "No," how about helping find some solutions that work?
