Do robocalls merit more Big Government?

In his letter in The Signal on Aug. 31 (“Outlaw robocalls and give us all some peace”), Don Gately closed by writing: “But I think those ‘robocalls’ should be outlawed.”

A perfect example of the mentality and attitude that’s led us down the road to meddlesome, intrusive Big Government that tries to control and regulate every aspect of our lives.

“I’m annoyed by something, therefore I want to pass a law to ban it.”
Good grief.

I’m annoyed by all the junk mail that clutters up my mailbox, and the spam that shows up in my email all the time.

Oh, well. That’s what trash cans and “delete” buttons are for.

Why don’t you try this? When the phone rings, check the Caller ID (CID). If you recognize the caller, answer the phone; if you don’t, ignore it.

You can even take it a step further, like I do. If I don’t recognize the CID I hit the “on” button to answer the call and stop the ringing, then immediately hit the “off” button to hang the phone back up.

Problem solved, all without letting the government take control of yet one more aspect of your freedom.

By the way, robocalls are already “banned” if your phone number’s on the federal Do Not Call Registry. ... yet look how ineffective that has been.

So what’s next? The Phone Gestapo?
