CHP honors officers killed in line of duty

More than 200 California Highway Patrol officers who have died in the line of duty will be recognized during this year's memorial ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 7 at the CHP Academy, 3500 Reed Avenue, West Sacramento 95605.

Special tribute will be paid this year to Sacramento native Officer Joseph Sanders, along with a 21-gun salute by the honor guard, laying of wreath, bagpipes, buglers and roll-call reading of the names of all 214 officers with ringing of memorial bell.

Officer Sanders was assigned to the Santa Fe Springs Area and was struck by an errant vehicle while directing traffic because of an earlier collision on the rain-slick Pomona (State Road 60) Freeway in Hacienda Heights.

Officer Sanders sustained major injuries and was flown by helicopter to USC Medical Center. where he died Dec. 15, 2008.

He is survived by his pregnant wife, two sons, one daughter, one stepson and his parents.
